Today's day included too much adventure even for me...😅
I left the hotel in Querétaro at 7:30am. About 60km before the Mexico City airport, there was something on the highway that I saw too late. I quickly realized that something was wrong with my front tire. Shortly after, the tire fell apart. After pulling over and not knowing what to do, I decided to drive slowly on the rim to an exit a few hundred meters away. There was a toll booth there, and fortunately, a few men helped me to change the spare tire. I have rarely been so grateful to someone!
I continued driving cautiously, but 10km later, the police stopped me, saying I was driving too fast... So, I did what the travel guides advise and offered them my last cash. They took the 1,000 pesos (about 50 Swiss francs, a fortune here!), not without giving me 200 back so that I could pay the toll to the airport... Well, I returned the car, paid for the damaged tire, and was just glad to make it on time for my flight.
However, the adventure story is far from over. After the flight to Cancun was delayed for two hours and I had to wait another half hour for my rental car, I started driving to Valladolid in quite darkness (you shouldn't drive in the dark in Mexico, especially not alone!). I had a hotel reservation there, so what else could I do? The car was given to me with half a tank of gas, and the man just said I could return it with half a tank... What I didn't realize: there is not a single gas station along the entire route from Cancun to Valladolid (145km)! So, I drove through the darkness without knowing if the gas would last...
Well, to conclude the long story: I arrived at the hotel completely exhausted shortly before 10pm. There was no food available, but at least they made me a drink at the bar - I really needed that! The hotel is great, my room is nice, and now I'm looking forward to a restful night!
