After a pretty cold 8 1/2 hours in economy class, I arrive in Johannesburg early in the morning. To save money, I decide to take public transportation to the hostel. Of course, the taxi industry doesn't like that very much, so the bus stop is not right at the airport, and I have to walk another 20 minutes. After finally finding the right side of the bus stop (left-hand traffic), I have to wait a little bit. But the bus eventually comes and I get on. The first surprise comes when paying - cash is not accepted here. I need a special card, which, however, is not available for the bus. But the bus driver shows some compassion and takes me anyway. From the bus, I transfer to 2 different trains, and finally, I reach my destination.
For the first 1 1/2 days, I try to fight my jetlag as much as possible by sleeping.
My first trip in Johannesburg is quite short. The area around my hotel is not very inviting. Every 5 meters, I'm asked for money, food, signatures, etc. So, it's back to the hostel for now. There, I meet a colorful group of people. We spend the next days and especially nights together, going out for nice meals, to bars and clubs, but also to galleries.
