Drive to Barstow / Route 66

Diterbitake: 06.10.2016

Today we were only on the roads. First we went to Needles, along the Colorado River. It was really green here again, but we didn't find a nice place by the river to park our camper and have lunch. Almost everything by the water was developed and private property. We then continued on the old Route 66. Here, there were old, abandoned gas stations and cafes, which were probably no longer profitable due to the construction of the nearby freeways. Along the roadside, many tourists had written names and texts on a wall with stones. In Amboy, there is still Roy's Motel and Cafe to marvel at. The owner has turned the old rest area into a kind of museum. The small cabins of the motel had old school and textbooks from the 60s. The reception was also equipped in keeping with the old times. From Amboy, you could also see an old volcano, which had its last eruption 10,000 years ago. Here, we had driven almost half of the Route 66 that we had planned to do. The second half was terrible. It was too late to indicate that it was a 'Rough Road', but turning back was not an option anymore. The road was only made up of its substructure with many potholes. We drove the bumpy road at about 30 km/h for about 20 miles until we could merge onto the freeway that ran next to us. However, the landscape was very interesting, as we drove along the outskirts of the lava rock and could also stop to get closer. Once we reached the freeway, we continued on it all the way to Barstow, where we will spend one more night before heading back to the city. Los Angeles, here we come ;-)
