24.01.2023 from Angusvale in Mitchell River NP to Baw Baw NP

Diterbitake: 27.01.2023

Early in the morning, there are certainly 20 or more kangaroos on the freshly mowed lawn in front of the toilet, they are very attentive and know when to flee. We pack up and drive to Sale. Here we have to prepare for the next few days and possibly book a spot. Last night, 2 campers came by, they are curious and want to know where we come from and where we are going. They tell us that everything is fully booked on the coast due to the upcoming national holiday on January 26th, the end of the holidays, and the weekend. We still try it and have to realize that there is no place to book on the coast.

We decide to go inland, 3 destinations are initially planned, the first one being Baw Baw (pronounced with a short o like BOBO the dormouse or the Bo in Pho Bo), but we need almost 2 hours for the internet today and we still have to go shopping, yogurt and bread are out.

On the way to NP Baw Baw, we skillfully evade blocked roads and see why this area is called Gipps Land because of gypsum mining. The road into the park is adventurous, past the Thomson Lake dam (drinking water reservoir for Melbourne), up and down serpentines. The last 10 km are only a steep downhill 4WD path, always close to the edge, nobody should come towards us here.

Doesn't come either, because we are again the only ones on the small campground in the mountains by the river. We swim without and prepare our dinner when a heavy thunderstorm restricts all our activities. Good that we have a car. The fire is quickly ignited, there are still embers from the previous one. Unfortunately, there are no stars to be seen today, the clouds hang low. But we are in good spirits and hope to see one or the other kangaroo in the evening.
