Platz der Luftbrücke - Airlift Monument

Diterbitake: 11.08.2023

On February 19, 2023, I did a little test run. Just half an hour outside in bright sunshine. It was quite windy, so the 7 degrees felt really cold to me...

I realized that it's not enough to just go out with a phone and have the template saved on it. It was only at home that I noticed that the angle of this image was completely wrong.

In the podcast "100% Berlin" by rbb 88.8, there is an episode about the airlift that really gives you goosebumps: Schokolade vom Himmel - Der Süßigkeiten-Bomber von ...ARD Audiothekhttps://www.ardaudiothek.de › 100-berlin › rbb-88-8

On berlin.de, the following can be read about the monument:

Airlift Memorial

During the blockade of the West Berlin sectors by the Soviet Union from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949, the supply of West Berlin was maintained by the Berlin Airlift. 2.2 million people were supplied with food, building materials, and coal during this time through over 277,000 flights. The majority of the Allied aircraft landed at the Tempelhof Airport.

This event and the victims it claimed are commemorated by the monument erected in 1951 according to plans by Eduard Ludwig (1906–1960) on the Platz der Luftbrücke in front of the airport building. Its three ribs pointing west symbolized the three air corridors that were still available between West Berlin and the Federal Republic of Germany at that time.

On the circular pedestal of the Airlift Memorial, there is an inscription that reads:

They gave their lives for the freedom of Berlin in the service of the airlift 1948/49

Below this are the names of all the deceased listed in the accidents.

So I need better preparation and maybe a photo app with a ghost image in the background. Let's see...
