Popa-Falls

Today, geographically speaking, the return journey begins, which we have planned in several stages. The drive ends after 4 hours and approximately 380 km at the White Sand Lodge Campsite at Popa Falls. Ultimately, it is not waterfalls but rather 3 m deep rapids of the Okavango River, which do make quite a noise. We are about 10 m away with our rooftop tent and continuously hear the water rushing.

We are recommended a sunset boat tour, so we are curious to see what awaits us. Besides two smaller crocodiles, which seem rather small compared to those seen yesterday, this time we see many hippos up close. Even though they repeatedly dive underwater, we can spot over 30 different ones, sometimes on land, sometimes in the water.

After nightfall quickly follows sunset, and after cooking, we want to go to the bar a bit further away from the campsite around 8:30 PM. However, shortly before reaching the bar, the camp manager with security comes towards us and asks why we are walking alone in the dark.

Ultimately, since the bar had already closed, we are sent back home, but accompanied by armed security. Apparently, the hippos also come onto the campsite to feed, and if people are not in a car or tent, they can also attack.

Therefore, we go early to our rooftop tent - tomorrow, the longest drive of our tour is on the agenda.
