Day 5 - Pure nature
From Klaipeda, take a ferry to the Curonian Spit - an almost 100 km long sandbar that separates a part of the sea from the Baltic Sea.
However, our exploration of the Spit ended at Nida, the last town before the Russian border to Kaliningrad.🚷
The entrance fee to the Curonian Spit National Park is 20€, parking is only allowed at official parking lots.
But it's worth it!😍 Strolling through the small villages of Nida, Preila, and Juodkrante - so many picturesque, colorful wooden houses.🏡🏡🏡 You feel like you're in Sweden...🇸🇪 In front of many houses, you will find 'Kurenwimpel', which used to be mounted on the fishing boats as an identification feature. Each boat had a unique flag, the colors and shapes served as 'codes'. This way, it could be checked from the mainland with binoculars which fisherman was fishing in which area and if everything was in order.🛶🔭🚩
But above all, the Curonian Spit offers nature! Beautiful forests and sand dunes over 50 meters high that are still in motion. 🌅 Throughout history, 14 villages have already been 'swallowed' by the dunes.🙈
Although it was Friday and the weather was great, it was very quiet and even lonely everywhere. No sign of mass tourism.👍 One or two groups of cruise tourists don't make a difference.🛳
Afternoon coffee and dinner in idyllic garden restaurants, napping in the dunes, an empty beach in the evening sun - a dream day comes to an end...🏖☀️
We were sad to say goodbye to the Curonian Spit, because tomorrow we'll be back to the city: Kaunas.
