After spending 2 nights in Unawatuna, we moved on to Midigama. This small town is about a 45-minute bus ride further east and is known among surfers. Our hostel, "Surfing Wombats," suggests what the main focus is here.
We were told by the hostel owners that in Midigama you can have fun as an experienced surfer.
Since we are anything but experienced surfers, we got some tips. After some consideration, we decided to go to Weligama Beach, which is only 10 minutes away. Beginner surfers can try their luck here without any worries.
No reefs or dangerous currents that can interfere with the unknowing. We had the beach all to ourselves, which was a welcome change compared to Unawatuna.
After a few attempts, thanks to our instructor, we were able to surf pretty well. We paid about €10 per person for 1.5 hours with him and another 2 hours for the board.
Unfortunately, a thunderstorm rolled in, so we postponed the 2 hours with the board to the next day. And we spent the afternoon in the town, visiting some shops and restaurants.
The next day we took a trip to Mirissa. It is more touristy than Weligama and Midigama. But with the impressive beach and the small island in the sea, it's easy to understand why many people come here for vacation.
The many beach bars offer a wide variety of food and drinks. Definitely a nice place to enjoy a cold beer or fresh fruit juice with the sound of the sea.
