10th January Bicheno - Wineglass Bay cruise

Birt: 17.01.2023

The Freycinet Peninsula is a national park with beautiful hiking trails along the coast and dreamy bays. Particularly beautiful is Wineglass Bay. That's where our cruise takes us today. From Coles Bay, around the peninsula, past colorful granite rocks and sandstone formations towards Wineglass Bay. On a small island off the coast, we were able to observe seals, later dolphins joined (difficult to photograph). The highlight were two whales, which should actually be in the Antarctic by now. Impossible to capture them with the camera. That was a great spectacle. Then we anchored in Wineglass Bay to have our lunch. Why is it called Wineglass Bay? Because of its shape, mmh, not only that. During the days of whaling, the whales were slaughtered in the bay, and a British officer, who watched the spectacle from a rock, said, oh, the bay looks like a full glass of Burgundy. I'm glad that today it looks like 'a good glass of Riesling'. After lunch, we headed back to Coles Bay and saw the whales again there. In my memory they are, unfortunately no photo.

In the afternoon, we went on foot to Freycinet Island with beautiful pictures of the wild coast.
