Day 4: Thursday, April 19, 2019
Route: 5 Rivers Cycle Path (Regensburg - Berching)
Kilometers covered: 98
I got up early again, had the remaining pizza from yesterday for breakfast, and started cycling. First, I had to find the Danube, which wasn't easy. Once I found it, I followed it: the path led me through Bad Abbach and then into an industrial area. The signage here and in the next town was so confusing that it took me half an hour to find my way out.
Finally, I made it and continued following the Danube through fields and past Allen. Today was the warmest day of my short trip. I stopped and sat in the grass several times. After a while, I saw the Befreiungshalle getting bigger and bigger: Kelheim was approaching. I quickly explored the city center and then continued towards Riedenburg.
On my very first bike tour at the tender age of 8, my mom and I stopped here and had a spaghetti ice cream sundae. I did the same now. Refreshed, I tackled the last kilometers, some of which followed the Altmühl. Now there were some inclines to conquer, but the views over Dietfurt and Beilngries were breathtaking.
From Beilngries, I followed the Main-Danube Canal and actually arrived home at 4 pm. It was then that I realized I had lost my sweater along the way. I drove the last 3 kilometers again with my car and there it was - I found it!
Unfortunately, my trip did not end well once I got home: from 6 pm onwards, I spent the next two days in bed with a stomach bug.
