28.01.2023 by Alex to Toorongo Waterfall Free Camping
To get straight to the point, we had a great day today. Not that yesterday wasn't also beautiful, but today we saw a lot. First, we crossed a hilly landscape with yellow ripe grass, here and there cattle, in the distance medium-high mountains, then we entered the Yarra Ranges NP and the scenery changed. Tall eucalyptus trees, deep canyons, green rainforest and fern trees. The road is narrow, we are driving slowly to see a lot. We are on our way to the Toorongo Waterfall, where there are free camping options and we hope to find a spot for the night. And contrary to my fears, there are still plenty of spots available and we settle in. Today we hike again, a bit more challenging, to the Toorongo Waterfall and a pile of stones that is supposed to look like an amphitheatre. It goes up quite steeply, 120 steps support the hike and we are actually rewarded with a unique waterfall, not with masses of water but with cascades that reach far up into the mountains. We walk through a rainforest with tall eucalyptus trees and many fern trees. It is difficult to stray from the path here, the forest seems impenetrable.
The water trickles over large and small stones, unfortunately the water is not clear, the brown soil has colored it, but that doesn't matter, we went swimming in the pool yesterday.
Back at the campsite, we light a fire, everyone does it here. It is supposed to keep the flies away, but they are just waiting for dinner, then they are all back. The hope remains that the flies will go to bed after 8 pm. Tomorrow we are looking forward to the coast or the vicinity. Let's see what the free camping has to offer.
