Day 25 - It works!

Javier, my troubled child, read a whole word today! Two syllables! And I'm sure he didn't guess. Keeley said I just need to be patient. They've had children here before where nothing happened for months. And all of a sudden...boom, the breakthrough. I can't get too euphoric in case it was just a stroke of luck.

December 14th is the last day of school in the project. After that, it's still open until December 21st and the children can continue to come for lunch. During this time, those sponsored by a sponsorship write thank-you Christmas cards. We volunteers then have to translate them into English. On the 21st, all the children (or only the sponsored ones? I need to ask again...) will receive a new backpack with supplies for the new school year. And on the 25th, the big Christmas party is happening! After that, the project is closed for two weeks.

The public schools are already on vacation in some places. Altogether, quite a few days off have accumulated. Through regular meetings of the faculty, through holidays that are then extended to a week when there's a full moon, when there's a threat of rain. The full moon thing is nonsense. But often teachers don't come to school when it rains. Some teachers also recommend that children stay home when it's raining. One reason for this is that the unpaved roads are completely soaked when it rains. The children then bring all the dirt into the classroom and the teachers have to clean it up. So claim the wicked tongues. Others say that if the students get wet on their way to school and then sit in school with wet clothes for several hours, they might get sick. Then they will be absent for several days. It's better to stay at home on a rainy day.
