Let's go to Canada!

Birt: 13.12.2023

On November 23rd, 2023 I wake up in complete darkness. But where? Yes, exactly in Dreieich, just a few kilometers from Frankfurt Airport. Thank you Michi for our lovely evening and it was great that we met again in Germany after we got to know each other in the hostel in Kuala Lumpur.

The airport in Frankfurt hasn't gotten any smaller yet, after a slightly longer orientation tour with Susi and Mathias on hand, everything was finally found.

9 hour flight (with a 6 hour time difference) Frankfurt - Toronto is coming up.

The plane leaves on time (11:50 a.m. German time) and I am happy about the more classic film selection on board. Casablanca and The Color Purple kept me awake and then of course the first travel acquaintance from the plane next to me. She shared the incredible story of her cousin being shot by her ex-husband after she filed for divorce. So, keep your eyes open when choosing your partner!

Once you arrive in Toronto, entry should be quick. But she isn't. During the 2.5 hours in line, I was soooo happy that I was able to conjure up this lovingly buttered sandwich from Michi out of my hand luggage and then finally it was my turn - everything just in time for the next flight to Vancouver.

I had the next moment of happiness when I held my work permit in my hands. An absolutely unreal feeling!

The plane from Toronto to Vancouver left at 8:15 p.m. - 5 hour flight and 3 hour time difference. - and so I was there at 10:15 p.m.

I didn't notice anything about this flight because I was so tired that I even overslept the takeoff.

Take the last Skytrain into the city and then rejoice and wonder and enjoy and get straight on the wrong bus.

My first hostle is wildly romantic on Jericho Beach - unfortunately not very well connected in terms of transport but perfect for the first jet lag walk the next morning on the beach and one of the super rich areas (Kitsiliano).

I just signed up for a cell phone contract, dropped off the mail and then went to meet Rachel and Rich - my first workaway family. They live on Bowen Island and had a shopping day on Friday and included me in the process.

So we worked our way through the typical network of North American traffic to the ferry to Bowen Island. On board, the two twins aged 19 months and us three adults and soooo many purchases.

Why am I flying to Canada in the cold?

Yes, really good question, since I feel most comfortable barefoot with warm feet.

The Sunset Coast is actually rather warmer (which is why all of Canada's homeless people can be found in Vancouver) and is therefore more likely to be rainy in winter instead of snowy.

I've always wanted to see Vancouver - so it's a classic case of travel fever and FOMO combined and all I can say is that I haven't regretted it for a second.

The options for flying from Vancouver to Hawaii are affordable and there are the famous Lomi-Lomi massages - I would like to learn that in this context.

From a culinary point of view, I'm excited to see what the second largest country in the world has to offer and I don't have to wait for the warm weather.
