Gao Ye rules Cangzhou

Naipablaak: 14.08.2024

Gao Ye (532–564), the fifth son of Gao Ci, a powerful official of the Eastern Wei Dynasty, had a comprehensive understanding of world affairs and played a significant role in decision-making. In the sixth year of Emperor Xiao Jing Di’s reign (in 548; the Eastern Wei Dynasty lasted from 534 to 550), Gao Ye was appointed governor of Cangzhou. He is a very disciplined and frugal regent who cares for both the large and small matters of society. During official business meetings and discussions, participants and staff are required to bring their own food. Any harassment of the population must be avoided. Once, Zhang Da, the chief administrator of Shiwo County, came to the city to sort things out. In the evening, he went to the home of a resident to be treated to chicken soup. After Gao Ye learned of this, he came and reprimanded the official severely, saying: 'Why don't you pay the people who are serving you chicken soup?'
This incident quickly became known in Cangzhou, and the population praised Gao Ye's governance style and character.
