Spiekeroog

Naipablaak: 03.07.2024

All hands on deck!

The weather forecast was not as optimistic as we travelers - and there were a lot of people who were trying to get on the ferry to Spiekeroog in Neuharlingersiel. The parking lot was pretty empty and the fee is only due when you leave the lot. The wind was so strong that it seemed advisable to board straight away. There were no more window seats and we were happy to leave standing on deck in the wind and weather to our storm-hardened fellow travelers; they also quickly fled into the interior because the wind was accompanied by a little moisture.

Our table neighbors were quite quiet, but we learned that they often vacation in East Frisia and are from the Moselle.

The crossing took 45 minutes and we had the island under our feet. Our fellow travelers had the same goal - to the center of the island. Since we didn't know the island, we were able to enjoy everything without reservation. The view of the houses, the small shops, the hotels and holiday homes, the BUNTE KUH ice cream parlor with ice cream flavors that southern Germans really don't know; at most by name: SanddornInselEis e.g. Since I can only enjoy ice cream in very small portions, I was allowed to try a little. It tasted very delicious of sea buckthorn.

A latte and a piece of cake later we went to the tourist information office. Great exhibition of shells. The name tags on the individual specimens did not correspond to the official name of each shell. Instead, a Berlin collector had had fun giving them names that corresponded to their appearance. A very good tip for parents with young children too.

The weather forecast was right: it started to rain. We managed to get a spot under the awning of the NUDELMANUFAKUR just in time and waited out the heavy downpour with an espresso.

We were tempted to take a walk to the Westend. However, we couldn't find the circular hiking trail 2. So we preferred to walk to the Westend with the wind at our backs.

We didn't take the way back along the beach because the wind was blowing sand everywhere - which wasn't exactly pleasant. We decided to go back the same way. A fish sandwich to go and the tourists are delighted. Unfortunately there were no crab sandwiches - they would cost around €15 and nobody would pay that. Not even me! We quickly handed in a find at the museum because the town hall was already closed and then went back to the harbor so that the ferry could take us back to land in Neuharlingersiel.

Parking fees paid, delicious fish cakes for dinner and then ended the evening with the game WING BEAT. More complicated than I thought, despite help from the other players. It will take many more game nights until I fully understand the game. It got late; but it was a nice end to an eventful day.

See you soon!
