6th Day - Shopping in Trapani

Naipablaak: 28.10.2017

This morning the sky was full of clouds, but only briefly. At 8 o'clock everything was blue and I was ready to make plans after a delicious breakfast in the fresh air:

I have to say, this blood orange jam is amazing.

Saturday in Italy... it seems that the shops are only open in the morning? So I didn't have much time to think. I liked Marsala and it's also easy to reach for a half-day tour. But then Trapani also appealed to me after a short search on Google. And I hadn't been there before.

So off to the highway, the entrance is only 5 minutes away. After about 40 minutes I was on the outskirts of the city. Now it was clear to me why there were so few cars on the highway... they were all in Trapani. Honking and standing, even better than yesterday in Monreale. According to Google Maps, it was still 2km to the old town... I didn't really want to walk all that... and then carry bags back. But the parking spaces on the roadside became scarcer, so I just took the opportunity. As luck would have it, there was a big Benetton store right next to the car. So I didn't have to carry the first bag at all, I could leave it in the car right away.

After different shopping experiences so far, I was very surprised by the diverse selection! In some cities, besides phone shops, supermarkets, and tourist needs (typical Sicilian products such as ceramics, wine, delicacies...), there are hardly any nice clothing stores. And Palermo seemed too extensive to me at first impression (of course my toe was to blame... but it's fine now). So, short and sweet: Trapani was wonderful, many beautiful shops, not just the usual brands, but also small retailers that I didn't know yet. The old town is located on a narrow peninsula that juts out into the sea. At every intersection, you get a good blow, there's plenty of wind.

This time I was better prepared, I left the summer dress in the closet and suddenly two saleswomen were very surprised that I wasn't Italian... you see, you just have to swim along inconspicuously :-)
I passed by a rather inconspicuous church on the way back. For 1 euro, including a holy picture, I could view the beautiful interior:

Back in Balestrate it was time to relax. Reading and handicrafts, and I also had to give a dear congratulations to my little granddaughter who is exactly one year old today.

Then something really nice happened. The father of my landlady came by, fed the cat, and did some work on the property. When I was already busy preparing dinner, he came to my open door and asked, looking at his bucket full of eggplants, if I wanted to take some. My 'prendo due, grazie' turned into 4 magnificent specimens that could easily feed a family of 4. And there were still eggs in the bucket, 3 whole ones and 2 slightly cracked ones, for which I quickly got a small container from the kitchen. That will make a perfect scrambled eggs tomorrow for breakfast. I was very happy! And immediately came up with recipe ideas with eggplant.

For dinner today, we finally had the planned fresh tagliatelle with mussels, tomatoes, capers, onions, garlic, and aged Pecorino cheese (you know the story...). The Pecorino is running out, I have the justified hope that there will be nothing left at the end of the vacation :-) With a radish salad and white wine from Mount Etna.

It was delicious again!
Cooking is really something beautiful, fortunately, I haven't lost the desire for it even when I'm alone!
Speaking of a family of 4... the Italians know about the amount of dishes that accumulate when cooking. Here, you can find a 'proper' sink in every house, into which a large pasta pot easily fits without needing to fold it:

Why don't we have something like this?
In the evening, I took a little walk around the property. The evening sun promises good weather for tomorrow:

Citrus fruits also grow right by the house... but they probably still need some time to ripen.

That's it for today from Sicily. Have a nice evening and see you soon!
