Day 135 Bike Tour

Naipablaak: 05.09.2017

Luang Prabang is known for its many small villages around. One of them is the 'Whiskey Village'. Since the village is a bit outside, we rented bikes. According to the map, the route is about 25 kilometers. So we started pedaling, weaving through the motorcycles and cars out of the city. The route was more or less flat, we just had to overcome smaller waves from time to time. Actually, not really difficult, but with a, well let's say not perfect bike, it's a different challenge. The bike only had one gear, which didn't make things easier at all. At least the road was in good condition for the first 20 kilometers. But then we turned off the main road onto a dirt road. Due to the rain, the muddy path was dotted with puddles that had to be crossed somehow. Well, somehow we managed to arrive at the Whiskey Village without falling off the bike despite the very slippery road. But apart from a few special bottles that were selling whiskey with scorpions and snakes, there wasn't really much to see.

Then we looked for the ferry that should take us back to Luang Prabang. But the villagers told us that there is no ferry. Our map, which clearly showed a ferry, had apparently fooled us. A bit exhausted, we asked if there was another way to get back to Luang Prabang. Except for a villager who offered us a ride back in his car, but for an impossible price, no one had a solution.

Well, then we had no choice but to ride back the 25 kilometers with our bikes. That was not planned like this, but we didn't really have another choice. To make the situation even more perfect, it started to rain. At least we weren't sweating anymore.

Somehow we made it back to our hostel. But our butts were a bit sore. And riding 50 kilometers with only one gear is not something you do every day.

After a refreshing shower, we didn't go to the night market for dinner today, but to a restaurant where we treated ourselves to a big burger.
