Weekend in Melbourne

Naipablaak: 20.08.2017

Weekend in Melbourne is over too quickly. I met up with another au pair from AIFS in Melbourne and together we explored the city. The Queen Victoria Market is definitely worth a visit, with an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat at a very good price. There is also street food from all around the world. Definitely worth checking out. Of course, there are also many clothes that are all produced in Australia (or maybe not ;)). We resisted the urge to go shopping and when we arrived at the hostel, we found out that one person in our room was sick. We tried everything to get a different room, but unfortunately, the hostel was fully booked on a Saturday night. My host parents insisted that we go to a different hotel, at their expense. Not even the hand sanitizer promised to us by the hostel could change their minds. Understandably, as the fourth baby is coming on Wednesday and the probability of me getting the flu if I slept in that room would be significantly higher. I would have to stay away from the entire family and that is really bad timing. So we quickly found another hostel on the other side of the city and stayed in a small room there. The next day, we went to the Eureka Skydeck. It is an almost 300-meter high skyscraper on the other side of the Yarra River, with an observation deck on the 88th floor. From there, you have an incredible view over the entire city, some suburbs, the harbor, and the bay. I immediately spotted the AFL stadium from two weeks ago and saw some other highlights from up there as well. When you see Melbourne from above, you quickly realize that the streets are very organized in a rectangular shape. This makes navigation very easy and even we found our way around. Thanks to my wonderful navigation app as well. We spent the afternoon in Southbank, enjoying the sun and overlooking Melbourne's skyline. I think I even got a little sunburned. And that in winter!
