Another highlight was the ride on the old Baikal railway from Slyudyanka to Port Baikal. Numerous tunnels through rocks and bridges over rivers and streams had to be built for these 89 kilometers. Today, this section of the track is still traveled by a tourist train at a slow pace. When it was completed, it replaced the ferry service across Lake Baikal. In 1951, when the Irkutsk Dam was built, the track from Irkutsk to Baikal was flooded, and the current route through the mountains was built.
