24.9.: Joggins - Fossils on the Beach

Naipablaak: 26.09.2019

This morning, the sun disappeared for the first time and we are driving through drizzly rain. So we decide to start with indoor activities and visit Jost Vineyards (https://jostwine.ca/) in Malagash. Some of the best wines in Canada are produced in Nova Scotia. We want to convince ourselves at the tasting counter and each of us is allowed to taste three wines. Our choice is quite unanimous for the 'Jost Great Big Friggin Red'. The shop is huge with an attached restaurant. It all seems very commercial. The staff is friendly, but the famous Canadian warmth felt everywhere is subordinate to sales success. The prices per bottle start at about 17 CAD.

We continue driving through increasingly colorful landscapes and reach the Joggins Fossil Cliffs on the Bay of Fundy (World Heritage Site), one of the most important sites for fossil plants and animals (http://jogginsfossilcliffs.net/). In a modern visitor center with an attached café, you can get information or book tours. It is essential to check the tide times in advance, the visit only makes sense at low tide. There are geological tours over the stone beach, but you can also search for fossils on your own, although you are not allowed to take them with you. We climb over stones, fight off mosquitoes, and settle for a few photos of our finds. It's fun anyway!

We booked our vacation rental for the next two days through Airbnb: the Executive Penthouse in Riverview near Moncton. From the large terrace on the 3rd floor, we have a direct view of the Peticodiac River, whose water level fluctuates by about 6 meters between low tide and high tide. The apartment is huge, very modern, and has a pool table in the living room, which is of course tried out in the evening.
