Day 349: Highland Tour

Naipablaak: 13.07.2024

Last night, Ingveldur came to my room at half past ten and asked if I wanted to go on an adventure. Sure. If only someone had warned me that it meant getting up at half past six today...

At seven o'clock, the three of us (Stani, me, and one of the sons) were in a large off-road vehicle. At least I had found out by then that it would be a tour to the highlands.

After nearly two hours of driving through beautiful landscapes, we arrived at our first destination: Álftavatn Campground. By then, I had also found out why we were on this tour. The son of my host family works for a company where you can rent people to transport your camping gear from one campground to another so you don't have to carry everything. The hiking trail is called Laugavegur and is about a 4-day long hike.

After unloading and reloading some luggage, we continued to the next campground.

A quick stop at a waterfall was a must. Along the way, we noticed a dust cloud in the distance. As we got closer, we realized it was a herd of horses being driven along the path by a few riders.

We arrived at the next campground at a quarter past ten.

We made another quick stop at a small, sweet, uninhabited hut and a second one at another waterfall.

On the way to the third and final campground in Þórsmörk, we encountered many sheep, and drove through (I don't know how many) rivers and streams. Even though I had gotten used to the driving style, it was really scary to cross some really wide rivers.

Upon arriving in Þórsmörk, we first unloaded and then had lunch. The farm had provided sandwiches and coffee.

We drove back through the rivers to return to the farm, where I was pretty exhausted from the eight-hour drive.

Until then,

Julia
