Naviera Austral Ferry

Ebipụtara: 03.01.2019

I take the bus for 2 hours from Castro to Quellon. There I will take the ferry to Puerto Chacabuco. I'm very excited. 2 days ferry through the fjords of Patagonia. Thanks again to D. for booking from Germany. ❤️ Somehow it didn't work with my phone...

I reach the ferry around 12:30am, drop off my luggage and find my seat. It's not particularly comfortable, but it'll do...

I try to get comfortable to the best of my abilities (screaming children, rough seas, snoring men/women) and try to sleep.

I wake up in the morning with a few interruptions and I'm already looking forward to the view. The sea is now totally fine and I look around. Sooooo beautiful!!

In the onboard bistro I try to get a coffee. Currently closed. Great!! Some crew member seems to have taken a liking to me and takes me to the bridge in my morning coffee search.

Wohoooooo! Suddenly I'm standing next to the captains, who explain and show me everything (in Spanish). We communicate with hands and feet and I find out that it's better to leave the ferry in Puerto Cisnes in the afternoon instead of Puerto Chacabuco as originally planned. The ship will take 12 hours for the journey, I would arrive in the middle of the night and it only takes 4 hours by road from Puerto Cisnes to Coyhaique, where I want to go.

The ferry stops at really tiny ports, in the middle of nowhere, and I'm more than surprised that people from here still get picked up by small motorboats with all their belongings to go to smaller islands.

Onwards we go. Further and further through this beautiful landscape

I plan to get off in Puerto Cisnes and then hitchhike to Coyhaique (hitchhiking is very common in the Aysen region and absolutely safe), but then decide to stay in Puerto Cisnes for one night and take the bus at 5:30am to Coyhaique. Thanks to the booking app, it's super easy to find a hostel and the hostess helps me book the bus. It's not so easy - she has to make a phone call and I have to go to a restaurant to finalize and pay for the ticket. :-D

So I stay one night in this small fishing village and in the evening I see the following beautiful situation, for which I walk an extra 2 blocks to the beach/port....

Here's another picture of the tour I took with the ferry from Quellon (Isla de Chiloe) to Puerto Cisnes and then by bus to Coyhaique....
