The horror of Alicante

Ebipụtara: 07.03.2024

Day 40: According to the weather forecast, the sky should actually be cloudy all day today. But contrary to expectations, we had pure sunshine - the weather gods were probably particularly kind to me on my birthday. I received an incredible number of calls, emails and messages across a variety of platforms, which I was very happy about.

Nevertheless, we found time to have a second breakfast in a harbor restaurant and look at two things that have a few years more under their belt than me. For example the Torre de la Isleta , which towers over the coastline only about 100 meters from our pitch. It is one of the Torres de la Huerta , which can still be found in the region around Alicante today. These defensive towers were built in the 16th and 17th centuries. On them, soldiers were on the lookout for pirates - one of whom was the infamous Barbarossa - who were causing fear and terror with their ships. The pirates were less interested in treasure and valuables during their raids. They kidnapped people, took them to North Africa and made money on the slave markets there.

And just a few meters further, the Illeta dels Banyets stretches into the sea, a small headland that shows traces of settlement that are more than 4,000 years old. In the centuries that followed, this patch of earth was repeatedly cultivated and used by various cultures. The Romans built small fish ponds that were connected to the sea and built thermal baths. The remains of these buildings are still popularly called “Queen’s Baths” because Moorish nobles are said to have once bathed here. The ruins on the peninsula have been excellently restored. They are definitely among the sights of El Campello.

There are quite a few of them here. We're moving on tomorrow, but we'll have fond memories of this city. It is clear, but not small, offers many opportunities for shopping (important for Icke!) and eating out (important for me!) and allowed us to stand in a place right by the sea (important for both of us!), which was certainly one of the best Top 3 on this trip counts. It won't be an easy goodbye tomorrow...
