On our last day in Holland, we rented bikes to cycle through the dunes to Den Helder. At first, I thought it was a good idea, as Den Helder is not very far and Holland is flat, so it shouldn't be a problem. However, I didn't take into account the dunes. Without significant gears and with headwind, the slopes can be quite challenging. But on the way there, it was still manageable. Now, on the way back.
The ride through the dunes was really beautiful, I think it's pretty much the only landscape Holland has to offer. However, the trip to Den Helder took quite a while, even though it was only 6 km. But we finally reached our destination and first went to the 'city center', if you can call it that. There's not much here, just a few shops and restaurants. So strolling through the pedestrian zone didn't take very long. Then, we found a fish shop where we got some Kibbeling and fries (our secret goal for this mission).
Next stop: Fort Kijkduin. This was already on our way back. We took the path there along the dike. Here, we could cycle directly along the sea. However, the wind had picked up, making it difficult to make progress. Eventually, we decided it would be smarter to push the bikes for the last stretch, as it was faster and less exhausting. Up the hill and then the fort came into view. Time to get warm and sheltered from the wind!
