After the calm and sunshine of the day at sea, we were really looking forward to Portland in Maine. However, overall our expectations were not met. Portland is a small American town that is actually pretty by US standards. There are some pretty streets and some very fancy villas. On the hill of the town stands a lighthouse. Outside the town, you can drive to a lighthouse. Otherwise, the whole experience was rather disappointing. The sea park turned out to be a promenade by the sea. Nice enough, but definitely not worth a long journey from our point of view. However, there were beautiful views of the sea and the children enjoyed the playground. One highlight, however, was the Victoria Mansion, where we managed to get the first guided tour in the morning. We were alone with the very nice guide and she was able to give us really great impressions of this house. So much splendor and grandeur can usually only be found in Eastern European royal palaces. But the builder was a hotelier who was simply mega rich.
