On to the Rhinos!

Ebipụtara: 18.08.2023

After having our first Rolex (not the watch, but a typical Ugandan breakfast derived from 'rolled eggs') for breakfast, we started our long drive to Murchison National Park.

Along the way, we were able to observe everyday life in Uganda in the passing villages and towns, and even try grilled bananas from the local market during a quick stop.

After a good four-hour drive on surprisingly good roads, which were often in better condition than at home, we reached the intermediate destination of today - the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. In this well-guarded area, the originally native white rhinos have been resettled since the turn of the millennium. So, we set off through the bush in search of rhinos. And we didn't have to wait long to see the first herd, as they hid in the shade from the sun. Fortunately, white rhinos are not very aggressive, so we were able to observe the animals up close. We even got closer than the originally recommended 20m distance, almost within reach! It was fascinating and almost surreal to see these large animals, which you usually only know from zoos or movies, so close and without any barriers in front of you.

Afterwards, we had another 3 hours of driving ahead of us until we reached our accommodation for the next two days at Murchison National Park. It was already getting dark, so we could only guess that the lodge is located right on the Nile. The accommodation itself is fantastic. We are staying in a large tent with an open bathroom, so we were looking forward to a night in a cozy bed after a tiring day. And with a bit of luck, we might even hear the first hippo nearby during the night...
