05.08. Monterey

Today we want to cover the most beautiful section of Highway 1, the drive along the coast between Morro Bay and Monterey. Our first stop is the 'Elephant Seals View'. There you can watch elephant seals pass the time. Most of the time they simply lie on the beach and sleep.

A bit further north, we can take a short hike to the Salmon Creek Falls. After a short climb, we reach the waterfalls, which, as an experienced Austrian, are not really impressive.

Here, the highway winds up and down the cliffs towards the Pacific... always offering a great view. Unfortunately, the highway is closed at the halfway point with no detour. So, we have to take a two-hour detour, there is no other option. It's a pity that we can't drive all the way to the end as planned. We have to turn back and go over the mountains inland. Suddenly, it's 37°C, while it was still 16° on the coast... hard to believe.

We arrive relatively late in Monterey and check into our hotel room right on the beach. Despite being at the coast again with a maximum of 20°C and a strong wind, Felix and Flo take the chance to go swimming in the Pacific. The water is freezing cold!
