February 19, 2023 - Back to (work) everyday life

Diterbitkan: 20.02.2023

No, fortunately my journey is not over yet, luckily normal work life will have to manage without me for a while longer. But after four months of traveling, I get to engage in a regular activity for the next two and a half months. As I mentioned in the last blog post, I wanted to stay in Melbourne until early May. But a prerequisite for that was to work during this time. Australia is already very expensive and the big cities are even more expensive. And apart from the money, after so many changes of location in the past months, it's nice to live in one place for a longer period of time and develop a kind of routine. From May onwards, I will switch back to travel mode, but more on that at a later time. Until then, Melbourne is my "temporary home". Because after countless applications, I finally got a job. Last Monday, I had a short job interview with a computer manufacturer. And boom, I got the job offer on Tuesday and started on Wednesday. Fortunately, Australians are very uncomplicated about such matters. Until April 28th, I will be packing computers and doing handy work at that company from Monday to Friday. Definitely not the coolest job, but definitely better than picking blueberries in the field at 35 degrees. And somehow, it's also a nice experience that you can definitely take something from. And of course, work brings money.

In the past months, I sometimes thought that it would be cool to have a regular daily routine with some mindless activity. After three days of work, I see things a little differently again. I completely forgot what it's like to work eight hours a day. Even if the work is not physically demanding, it still challenges me quite a bit, which is why I fall into bed exhausted every evening. I'm very curious to see how the coming weeks will be. The colleagues I have had the pleasure of meeting so far are definitely super nice and very relaxed - typical Australians.

With the new everyday life, only the weekends are left for exciting activities. Last Saturday, I went to a soccer match between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City with another backpacker. Or in other words, it was the game between the bottom of the table and the top. By the way, the last match between the two had to be abandoned because of riots - something you can't imagine with Australians. So, excitement was guaranteed. And as it often happens, derbies write their own stories. In a game that was not as heated as the last time, the underdog prevailed in the end with 3:2, which only enhanced the atmosphere in the stadium. After the game, we went to one of the countless free concerts that take place in many corners of Melbourne on weekends. Melbourne is just cool!

Sunday was used for changing rooms in the hostel and relaxing. And then the weekend was over again. It's a very peculiar feeling when suddenly not every day feels like a Saturday anymore. From now on, I'll find Mondays annoying again. Even though not much exciting will happen in the coming weeks, I will still try to give you a few insights into my everyday life here from time to time.
