Roadtrip 2 - Great Ocean Road

Diterbitkan: 23.01.2018

On Saturday morning we picked up our campervan. Pretty cool thing, we'll report on it in a few days when we get to know the camper better. We invited Jenny for our trip to the Great Ocean Road.

We drove out of Melbourne, 96km south to Torquay, where the Great Ocean Road, which is very popular with tourists, starts. That afternoon we drove about 90km on the road, which mostly runs along the coast. We stopped at Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Lorne and stayed overnight on the Kennett River. The beaches were great for surfing, there are lifeguards everywhere and hundreds of other tourists. It looks beautiful, especially when driving along the coast. The weather was warm and windy, unfortunately the sky was completely cloudy. Campsite prices are crazy, we've been quoted prices of $90-$140 for an unpowered site. We ended up getting something for $70.

The next morning we continued to Apollo Bay. The weather was warm again, but cloudy. After the beach we made a stop at Maits Rest, a rainforest, there is a nice short walk there. Then we went to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. The owners asked $20 per person to see the lighthouse on the shore, which is outrageous. Luckily we have already seen other lighthouses on the west coast for free. A bit disappointed we drove on to the 12 Apostles, a nice stretch of road. Unfortunately, the sky became more and more overcast, so that we only saw one of the 12 Apostles until we arrived. This attraction was also very crowded with tourists.

We drove a total of 171km on the Great Ocean Road. It's nice, but we expected more. The many tourists and the outrageous prices have also contributed to this. In addition, we have seen such beautiful tours and places in Australia that this piece can't keep up.

In the evening we went to a free rest stop on the way back inland to Melbourne. There we met other travelers who had also been to the West Coast before and shared our opinion of the Great Ocean Road.
