Sanary-sur-Mer, Camargue and Avignon (18.03.-21.03.19)

Since we were self-sufficient in Montauroux, we chose a nice 4-star campsite in Sanary-sur-Mer. From there, you could reach the beach within 10 minutes by bike, and we took advantage of that right away. Unfortunately, it was still a bit too cold for swimming. Only a few surfers dared to get in the water with wetsuits on. We sat in a café enjoying the warm evening sun and the view of palm trees and the sea.

The next day, we continued to the Camargue. We crossed a branch of the Rhône with a car ferry to reach one of the last drivable beaches in the Camargue (Plage de Piemanson). It impresses with its vastness and the small dunes directly at the water.

The Camargue is a huge nature park that is home to many different species of animals. We saw several bird species (especially flamingos and herons), bulls, horses, turtles, and coypus. The many flamingos impressed us the most. Often, you could see the pink birds standing in the water at the roadside. We were able to observe them up close in the Parc Ornithologique, where the animals are fed but not captured.

We spent the following night at a free motorhome parking area. There was a small toilet that was inhabited by a much larger spider :D

On Wednesday, we visited Avignon with its famous bridge. This bridge became famous through the song 'Sur le pont d'Avignon' (pont=bridge). We also visited the impressive Papal Palace. We realized its size even more when we had to walk around it, since the gate where we parked our bikes and climbed the stairs was closed at 5 PM.

Today, we drove a little further along the sea towards Spain to do a slightly longer bike tour to the next town tomorrow.
