Things I didn't need

Pibliye: 23.11.2023

Here is a small list of things I had with me on this Camino but didn't need. It should be noted that you shouldn't generalize that you don't need these things, because it depends on so many factors: what the weather is like, can you wash in the hostel, when do you always arrive and are the clothes closest Dry day, which route to take (related to equipment) and much more:

-Hiking poles: I had a folding hiking pole with me that I never used once. I have to admit that I have never walked with hiking poles before and I think you can get used to them, but I don't want to have anything in my hands while making a pilgrimage. I took the hiking stick with me as a kind of security because I was unsettled by everyone saying that you definitely need a hiking stick on the Camino Frances. I probably won't take a hiking stick with me on my next camino. Firstly, you always have the option of buying a hiking stick or wooden sticks on the way or at the start and secondly, you can also use normal sticks in the forest. It may be that as I get older or have knee problems I will use hiking poles, but at the moment I don't see the need and so I won't be taking any with me.

-2. Jacket: I never needed this because my hiking jacket was never wet and I was able to wear it in the afternoon after the hike or I often only went out in a tank top.

-Rain jacket: In addition to my rain cape, I also had a rain or wind jacket with me, but I never used it. But. I wore it on the way there from Cologne, but it was actually unnecessary.

-Toilet roll: Always had it with me in case of emergency, but I didn't have to use it, but I'll probably take it with me again for next time.

-Notebook: I wrote my diary by hand for the first two days because that's how I always did it, but then I decided to write a blog. I actually wanted to do both at the same time, but after I wrote a blog post, I also wanted to enjoy the evening at each location and then write from the reconstruction a few days later. I also thought it was stupid. I have some kind of travel diary for almost every vacation, but if I'm honest, I haven't looked at almost any of them yet, although I can imagine that I'll look forward to these memories later. In general, I love writing by hand. I also prefer to read a book traditionally and not on an e-book or cell phone. But it's often easier on your cell phone. I don't know what I'll do in the future, but I always want to record something from every vacation, be it in a blog online or manually in a notebook.

-Hygiene: I had 2 small bottles of shower gel with me and 2 soaps, but there was soap in almost every accommodation. But of course that's not always the case and there is usually nothing, especially in public hostels. That's why I will always have shower gel with me in the future.

-Clothing: I had 3 pairs of hiking socks and one regular pair, but only needed 2 pairs. One for hiking and one when I arrive. I then hand washed the other one and they were dry the next day, although it has to be said that they are Wright Socks socks, i.e. hiking socks made of a special material that dries quickly. Otherwise I had a long sweatshirt with me that I hadn't worn. And a pair of rain pants that I wore for a day, but they were too big and didn't help. I wore them over my normal pants and on the rainy day in question, the rain pants were wet and the pants underneath were wet from sweating. So I could have saved myself the rain pants.
