Iceberg ahead!

Pibliye: 28.07.2017

We spent three days at sea after finally heading north from Iceland. We had rough seas and stormy weather before finally catching sight of the Greenlandic coast. I can tell you, it was an emotional moment when we saw the first iceberg. During our afternoon shift at the counter, we were fascinated as iceberg after iceberg passed by, finding it hard to believe our own eyes. Beautiful sights! The first excursions on land were both exhilarating and exciting. Alongside some unexpected program changes, we were greeted with one natural beauty after another. Our first stop was Nuuk, the capital of Greenland with about 18,000 inhabitants - cozy and manageable, yet surrounded by unique landscapes and mountains. After a panoramic drive, which us scouts had to translate from English to German that day, we knew even more about the life of the Inuit and other inhabitants of Greenland. On the way to Ilulissat on the west coast, we passed gigantic icebergs and caught sight of the first whale in the panorama of Disko Bay. Pure nature!

Furthermore, I had one of the most moving excursions of my time with AIDA: an evening boat trip along the icebergs, some of them reaching up to 35 meters out of the water. Here too, we went on a whale hunt and saw smaller humpback whales up close.

In the evening, my team and I set off together to the small town and climbed a rocky hiking trail with a beautiful view of the ice desert and the sunset. Life here seems to revolve at a completely different pace. Time is relative - it's probably more important to consciously experience moments. And that's what we did after our arduous ascent up the mountain - a Bionade in hand and nice people around me gave me a feeling of infinite freedom! Far away from home, I'm experiencing so many of these incredible landscapes, places, and countries, albeit "alone". Nevertheless, I have no regrets about any single day and am looking forward to the last 4 weeks on board AIDAcara.

P.S. Tonight, during a walk on the deck, we were able to observe several passing whales. It couldn't be more beautiful here! Warm temperatures, sunshine, and stunning sunsets truly bring a smile to your face :-)
