Day 75 Forest of Elea-Palaiocastro Ruin

Pibliye: 22.09.2021

We had never really been here before because it is often overcrowded. But today: We left the car at the small parking lot overlooking Pylos. From here, there is a hiking trail up to the castle ruins with a beautiful view of the Ochsenbauch Bay and back along the lagoon behind the dune area. The ruins date back to the 13th century and were built for observation and defense purposes. In the 15th century, they were taken over by the Venetians. From then on, the Venetians or the Ottomans alternated in their ownership. The views of the surrounding rocks and the sea are always fascinating. There is a lot of magic in the air here. The small cave of Nestor is part of the world of Greek mythology. Along the way, you can find the European cyclamen and the mandrake, both blooming beautifully in purple. The scent of Mediterranean herbs is intense. Burki has once again done an outstanding job today. The trail often required a high level of surefootedness due to the steep and rocky terrain.

The Ochsenbauch Bay is named after its resemblance to the Greek letter Omega. It is a semicircular beach with a dune area behind it. On the land side, it borders the Gialova Lagoon, where you can observe flamingos with binoculars. For me, it's another typical place that is so good for the eyes. Provided that the number of humans is kept to a minimum. 😂

When we arrived at the parking lot, we took advantage of the all-wheel drive and did not park on the beach. And eventually, we were all alone, well not quite, the mosquito species kept us company even though they were not invited.
