Day 4 - Immersing into the military past
In the surroundings of Liepaja, you will come across countless fortress sites along the coast. Built under Tsar Alexander III in the late 19th century, these installations were later expanded and utilized by the Soviets. Restricted area for the population until the 90s.🚫⛔
Nowadays, the concrete monsters at 'Karosta' are like abstract artworks in the landscape - especially since fortresses inland ('Redans') are actually used as 'canvases' for art projects.🎨🖼
These dark, damp structures were incredibly fascinating. Everything is freely accessible, but you still have to watch your step.⚠️
The scale of the installations exceeds our imagination. Overgrown hills by the road are not hills at all when you take a closer look!😳🔎
Relaxed and entirely uneventful afternoon walk in Palanga (Lithuania). A 470m long wooden bridge extends into the sea.⛱
We are staying in Klaipeda for two nights. Tomorrow, we will take a ferry and drive onto the Curonian Spit, a 100 km long natural dam (between 400m to a few kilometers wide). We better not get too close to the Russian border (Kaliningrad). The Russians probably don't find that amusing.🙄
