07.08.16 | Day 15 | Pelourinho

Objavljeno: 12.10.2016

We used the weekend for a slightly longer excursion: Pelourinho.

Pelourinho is a district of Salvador.

Tourists associate the place with two things: 1. The many colorful facades of the houses, which is why Pelourinho was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the location for the music video by Michael Jackson for the song They don't care about us. Not only this work, but also the personal support of Michael Jackson led to a transformation of the place.

In Pelourinho you can also find many Samba and Capoeira schools by different masters.

It is a very beautiful place that you should visit more than once. However, it should be said: Watch your belongings and do not go into the side streets.

Even if you may not immediately recognize something like this yourself, the Brazilians are happy to point it out and try to protect you.

After we had looked at everything in the upper city, we went back to the 'elevator', which connects the upper and lower city. Yes, it really is an elevator, in fact there are four of them. You can use or take them for 15 cents per ride.

From above you also have an interesting view of the lower city with all its dilapidated and collapsing buildings.

When you arrive at the bottom, you will meet many vendors and locals waiting at the opposite stop for the buses. Opposite there is the Mercado Modelo and the port of Salvador, from where you can take ships to the opposite islands.

The Mercado Modelo is comparable to a Turkish bazaar: on 2 floors, all sorts of goods are sold, but mostly local goods. It doesn't take long to walk through the many narrow passages to realize that each stand repeats itself. That's why the visit was quickly done.

If you are looking for souvenirs for home, you will find them here, but also in Pelourinho.
