Kibebe Farm Iringa

Objavljeno: 14.10.2018

On Friday afternoon, we left the city to drive to a farm 30 minutes away where two other German girls are working.

The farm is run by an English family. Richard was born on the farm, after his father emigrated in 1954. Now he lives there with his wife and three children - although two of them are not permanently present. In total, they own 420 hectares of land, 600 cows - most of which are dairy cows, several sheep, and 12 horses.

We were warmly welcomed on Friday evening. There was Indian food, gin, and they had a bedsheet hanging on the wall where we watched Mama Mia 2. There were fairy lights hanging in the garden and above us was the clear starry sky. It was like being in a movie and I couldn't believe I was actually experiencing something like this.

On Saturday, it continued to be just as wonderful. In the morning, we went horseback riding, then we read a bit in the sun, and around 4 pm, the farm became really crowded. Neighbors from everywhere came for the Saturday volleyball tournament. There were probably around 50 people who came, played, and then left. Of course, we also played and had a lot of fun. Later in the evening, when we wanted to eat delicious pasta, we were called to witness the birth of a calf. Maria and I immediately went. It was pitch black and we had to first find the cow and drive her into the stable because she was so agitated and kept running away. I went in and even got to feel it, which meant my hand was almost up to my elbow in the cow. We then pulled the calf out by its feet. It was another experience that I will never forget! 2 hours later, we went back because the calf was very weak. We pumped milk from the mother and fed it to the calf.

And before we knew it, Sunday had arrived. We had a cozy breakfast outside and then went for a ride around the farm with Richard for an hour. It was impressive to see how vast the land is, how the cows can graze, and how everything is utilized. We had a barbecue for lunch and had delicious fresh meat. Even the milk and butter we had for breakfast were incredibly delicious. So fresh and intense. What I miss is cheese - a piece of Gouda costs around 10 euros here. For dessert, we had vanilla ice cream with Amarula, berries, and brownies. It was heavenly. We were spoiled rotten. It felt soooooo good and hopefully gives enough strength for the next week!
