Week 33 - Nordkapp to Senja

प्रकाशित: 03.07.2022

Last Sunday we reached Nordkapp as hoped the fog clouds cleared in the evening. Due to the 10 tour buses it was very busy. Here the midnight sun was probably advertised, because the buses drove away shortly after midnight. So we were able to enjoy the Meridian Sphere at Nordkapp in peace with a handful of people around 1 am. The light was also really beautiful at this time.

The next day we only went a few kilometers south to Skarsvåg. The place is the northernmost fishing village in the world. From here we took a hike to the local mountain from where you could see the Horn from Nordkapp.

On the following day we drove until shortly after Alta, where we accidentally found a beautiful spot by the fjord. We made the most of the good weather here. We even saw whales swimming right past our spot.

On Wednesday we went to the Steindalsbreen Glacier. After a 6 km hike we were right at the foot of the glacier. It was my first glacier and I found it very impressive.

On Thursday we visited Tromsø, the city is known as the Paris of the North. We searched in vain for this charm. We didn't like it at all, so we continued and went to the bridge to Sommarøy. Here there are sandy beaches and crystal clear water - almost like in Sardinia :-)

On Friday we reached the island of Senja. Here we took a hike to Hesten, from which you have a nice view of the mountain Segla. This mountain is shaped like a sail. The 400 meters in altitude over 2 kilometers demanded everything from us. Besides 27 degrees, there are huge horseflies on Senja that make relaxed walking impossible. Shade was also not available.

So we decided to do the next hike on Husfjellet not in the next afternoon but only in the evening (8 kilometers, 1200 meters in altitude). That turned out to be exactly right, we had the mountain to ourselves and the sun was simply at a really good angle, so we had a nice all-round view.

Meanwhile, we have left behind quite a few ferries and tunnels. The Nordkapp tunnel with a length of 7 kilometers was exciting, it runs under a fjord with a gradient of 9%. More than the 3rd gear is not possible uphill with my motorhome, so a long queue behind us was preprogrammed. In another tunnel we had 2 roundabouts. Other tunnels, on the other hand, are only single-lane with lay-bys in case something comes against you or almost not lit, so you can hardly see anything.

Actually, we wanted to take the ferry to Andenes on the Vesterålen Islands tonight. However, we were not the only ones with this idea. Unfortunately, the queue was too long, so we couldn't take the ferry. We are now staying in the line for the ferry so that we can also be sure to get on tomorrow. From Andenes we will then quickly go to the Lofoten Islands :-)
