My first two months in beautiful Canada are over. The second month was very unspectacular as I had a week of vacation. In Toronto, I watched a lacrosse game. The sport is really interesting and it was a very nice day, even though Toronto lost. I also got to go skiing one day. St. Anton is more challenging, but it was a lot of fun with my host brother and friends. We also visited the city of Orillia one day, which is 2 hours east of Owen Sound and has about 30,000 inhabitants. It is located at the northern end of Lake Simcoe and also borders the much smaller Lake Couchiching.
We also visited St. Jacobs, which is 1.45 hours south of Owen Sound. St. Jacobs, or Jakobstettel as it used to be called, became an attraction for visitors from all over the world due to its Mennonite past. The special thing about the Mennonites is that they still largely insist on their traditional way of life. You can immediately recognize them by their clothing and the horse-drawn carriages they use instead of cars.
We visited a model train layout in a small museum. There was also a German butcher shop, Julie bought a few packages of white sausages for me.
During the vacation, we cleaned up the garage one day and visited another waterfall. Otherwise, my host brother and I went to play soccer 2 or 3 times or went to the city to meet other exchange students.
Last weekend, we visited an elk farm and this trip was a little highlight for me. There were about 60 elks that could be admired. They were very impressive, how big and heavy they are. When I think that I am 1.90 m tall and the elks were even bigger up to the shoulder size. At the farm, you could also watch how maple syrup is made. I was surprised that the syrup consists of 60% sugar.
After the vacation, I had school weeks in which the teachers overwhelmed us with numerous projects. I was very busy researching and working on the projects, and to compensate, I did sports in the gym every day with my host brother.
Currently, we have mini vacations, a total of 4 days from Friday to Monday. On Sunday, the three of us (my host mother, host brother, and I) celebrate Easter, eat turkey with asparagus and potatoes, and for Easter breakfast, we have pancakes with maple syrup. I'm pretty excited.
I wish everyone who reads my blog a happy Easter as well.
