Day 10 from the Rotsteinhütte to the Spitzsteinbiwak

प्रकाशित: 11.08.2021

I had a good night's sleep in the Rotsteinhütte and only got up around 08:00. The two students (siblings) I met the previous day are still asleep.

I start by heating up my wood cooker to make myself a hot coffee. Quickly clean up the sleeping chamber and pack my backpack.

Now the two girls are also waking up and I say goodbye. It looks like we have the same destination: the Spitzsteinbiwak.

With a lighter backpack now, it's much easier to walk. After an hour, I reach the Rotstein and the Katzstein. The views are magnificent and I take some time to enjoy them.

After climbing the Spitzstein, I was already at the Spitzsteinbiwak.

12:30 pm is too early. I refill my water supplies and then a thunderstorm comes. Luckily, I am protected. After 45 minutes, the rain stops and I decide to go to the next biwak spot. I had calculated a 5-hour walking time.

I didn't consider that it's always going up and down here. I pass by the Felsenlabyrinth around 7 pm.

Darn, I have to keep going, it's still 1 hour to the biwak spot. But now it's going up and down again. And after about 30 minutes I look at the map and realize that I haven't made much progress.

Then my eyes spot a rock ledge with a fireplace and a cave in the background. When you camp like this without a tent, it's called 'boofen.' That's what I decided to do.

Besides the coffee this morning, I haven't eaten anything yet, but I have my wood cooker and noodles. But water?? I filled up 2 liters at the Spitzsteinbiwak.

Of the 3 bottles, there's only one left and Tori is thirsty, and so am I. So we share the drink and there's no noodle soup.

I took the opportunity to make a fire. Dry trees were nearby the overhang. When the fire was dying down around 10 pm, I snuggled into my sleeping bag.

In the distance, I heard thunder and saw lightning. This thunderstorm passed directly over me, and I watched it safely from my sleeping spot.

Lesson of the day:
Don't overexert yourself, only do what you can.
