Anyone who has seen 'Fackeln im Sturm' (North and South) will remember this house and the long driveway with the 94 giant oaks that form a wonderfully shady roof with their crowns.
I immediately had the scene in mind when Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) returns wounded on his horse to the Mont Royal plantation.
We spent many hours today on the plantation, taking photos of the beautiful mansion and oaks over and over again, and learned a lot about the history of the house, the plantation, and the era of slavery during an interior tour and a round tour of the plantation.
Boone Hall - that's the name of the plantation in real life - used to grow cotton, rice, and indigo (blue dye for dyeing uniforms) in earlier times, and later mainly produced bricks, which made the owner very wealthy.
The life of the slaves was hard, the small brick houses that can be seen on the plantation near the mansion were still the luxury version - the huts in the field were much simpler.
Boone Hall is still operational today, currently growing fruits, corn, pumpkins, pecans, and some cotton.
