Boqueria Market, Barcelona

प्रकाशित: 18.07.2023

We have arrived back home. We exchanged our Gustav for the NDH, the view of the sea for the view of the gentle wooded hills of the front Odenwald. Our Meli and Felsberg are back in sight.

We visited Barcelona once again before heading home. If you walk the street la Rambla from PL de Catalunya towards the Columbus Monument, you will see a row of houses on the right side after about 600 meters. Behind that row is Mercat de la Boqueria.

The market has been known since 1217 and since 1470 there is evidence that pigs have been sold there. Judging by its current appearance, the market has very little to do with why it was held there in ancient times. Today, the market offers fruits, cheese, fish, pasta, Spanish ham, sausages, vegetables, sweets, and drinks. Most of the goods offered are for immediate consumption. If you observe the activity off the market, you will also see that local businesses stock up on vegetables and sometimes meat or fish at the market. However, the majority of the goods are sold to the thousands of tourists flocking to the market.

Just like along la Rambla, the price level is significantly higher than normal. You have to see it and you also have to try something at one or two stalls. Unlike many attractions in Barcelona, there is no entry fee for the market and you don't have to pre-book a time-limited ticket to visit the market. The money saved on admission is well spent on food.

The best time to visit is in the morning at the beginning of the market. Later on, the paths between the stalls are almost impassable, you have to fight your way through.

For everyone who doesn't know what to cook for lunch in the morning, visiting the market is highly recommended.
