41 km to Chur

प्रकाशित: 11.07.2021

Second day and wake-up call at 05:00 on the dot, after a night that had washed us thoroughly. At around 22:00, a strong thundercloud settled over Buchs and after a few heavy gusts of wind, it started pouring down on our tents. Our tents, which we had bought specifically for our march, held up for about 20 minutes, then we felt the first drops on our faces. A few hours later, we were partially swimming in our tents. Everything was wet.

So the wake-up call was very unusual, as we first had to empty our tents and somehow find dry clothes for the march.

At 06:15, we started our second leg from Buchs to Chur. We made good progress again and covered a good distance. Some were a bit more beaten up from the previous day than they thought, so the first kilometers were quite tough.

It was a day of long straight stretches along the Rhine, the railway line, or the highway. The long straight stretches with not even the slightest curve really took their toll on us.

We took beverage breaks and used the short breaks for a snack that gave us strength for the next kilometers.

Around 10:00, the sun reappeared, which initially brought us joy but soon became challenging again, as it started scorching down on us around noon.

At Trübbach, we took a lunch break to prepare for the remaining kilometers. We had already covered about 30 kilometers shortly before reaching Lanquart. The red and white chimney, which had troubled us thirty years ago because it seemed almost impossible to reach, was getting closer slowly. But we were still highly motivated, even though the last 11 kilometers were really tough in high temperatures.

We were then relieved when, after seven hours, 41 kilometers, and 140 meters of altitude, we finally arrived at the campsite in Chur. Roland Eder was already waiting for us at our pitch and surprised us, as he had driven back to Gaißau to dry the tents, clothes, and mattresses.

Everything was perfect, and that evening, some visitors came to our campsite to give us the right motivation. Josef and Roland, our cooks, spoiled us with the best bacon noodles, and as the highlight of the day, Ralf and Matze, who had a professional masseur named Alex with them, arrived. He massaged all the marchers for about 4 hours, which really did us good. Now it's just a short sit-down and enjoy a beer, then off to bed. Tomorrow, another difficult leg awaits us with about 36 kilometers to Illanz. We just hope that tonight will be calmer and, above all, dryer.
