31st March

I do so many cool things here every day that if I only wrote them down once a week, I would forget half of them. That's why I'm writing down what I do every day now so I don't forget anything.
Today I got a new task: checking on cows (if they have calves and if they're doing well) and for that I can always take one of the horses :D. So that translates into riding for 2 hours every day (because I have to check in the morning and in the evening). Today I had Jay. That's a real Indian pony and I rode out without a saddle, only with a halter. Do you know how cool it is to gallop across the meadows like that? And now I do it twice a day :D. Usually, I have to ride pretty slowly so we don't scare the cows away. But whenever there's a stretch without cows, you can gallop :). Jay would prefer to gallop all the time ;). And this morning Henry was with me and showed me where to ride and we even let a cow and her calf onto the other paddock. But the cow ran in the wrong direction and then we had to gallop over obstacles, uphill and downhill through a narrow pine forest. I just held onto the mane and hoped that the branches were thin enough to break when I passed by. It worked! And I didn't fall off :)
And then today we continued building the fence. I thought we would do that with a digger. But I was mistaken. We lifted each individual log by hand. I don't want to know how sore my muscles will be tomorrow, because my arms already feel half dead. And the others did much more.... they had to saw with the chainsaw all the time and still lift logs. In the meantime, I was collecting wire somewhere else. During lunch, they told me that last year a grizzly bear ate a cow and her calf exactly at that spot. And I was just thinking to myself: Well, it would have been nice if someone had told me that when I work there alone. The only reassuring thing is that he is definitely not alive anymore (Henry took care of that), but now I still pay more attention to not parking my quad too far away ;)... just to be on the safe side. But today we made a lot of progress with the fence. Because we really have to hurry now, as the river is thawing and we won't be able to cross to the other side anymore. When we drove through in the evening with the ranger, the water in the cabin was already up to our ankles. Haha but we all had rubber boots on and it even got a little clean on the inside. And we also pushed a lot of water in front of us. We had a real wave in front of us that looked cool and the best part was that we didn't get stuck. But that could happen tomorrow. The last few nights we only came for dinner at 9 in the evening. And we were outside all day. (Really outside. We didn't even go inside for eating or using the toilet). And when you work outside from 8 in the morning until 8 in the evening, carrying logs around or riding, you can sleep really well. I always find it really hard to write these texts here without falling asleep.
