Matagalpa - a city surrounded by numerous coffee plantations

After leaving Esteli, we spontaneously continued to Matagalpa. This is a charming little town in the highlands of Nicaragua. Few tourists come here, which is why the prices are lower. There are numerous national parks and even more waterfalls around Matagalpa. However, since we are already experts in this area, we visited none of them without guilt. Instead, we climbed one of the many mountains around Matagalpa and enjoyed the view. It was particularly nice that we only met locals here. With an entrance fee of 10 Cordobas (about 20 cents), this is also a popular destination for the residents. At the end of the tour, we passed through poorer areas where families live in simple tin huts with earthen floors. No matter how poor the people are here, you can't tell at first glance. Especially the women always dress very nicely and elegantly.

Next on our agenda was the coffee museum, but it took us 3 attempts until the museum was actually open. In Nicaragua, you can't rely on opening hours or timetables. In the end, we still managed to visit the coffee museum on the last day in Matagalpa. It was interesting to see that mainly European immigrants promoted coffee cultivation.
