Mass tourism here we come - first stop Tulum

In general, all-inclusive resorts are limited to three places in the Caribbean. Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. However, it is still tranquil in Tulum. There is a hotel after another, but they are not 30-story concrete buildings. The city itself is located a little inland and there are good restaurants and small shops and galleries. There are many young people on the streets, as Tulum is also preferred by many backpackers.

We enjoyed a few nights in a small palm-thatched hut among the palms and we slept in the city for two nights. Due to the bad weather, we couldn't do too much. We found some nice snorkeling spots, preferring the less touristy ones.

A must-visit for all tourists is also the small bay of Akumal. Apparently, you can watch sea turtles in their natural habitat here. 500 meters before the bay, we were stopped by the first tour guide who told us about the protected habitat and only 400 visitors per day. The next 10 men on the street all shouted that they were cheaper. Finally arriving at the bay, a "self-proclaimed" guide explained to us that only 300 people per day are allowed to see the turtles. And surprise, if we agree right away, we are still included today. For the price of 25 euros, we were allowed to swim for 1 hour in a restricted area. We were also advised not to take the snorkeling tour with an official dive school, as the service with the many private guides waiting would be much better. In the end, we were so angry about this corrupt and overpriced story that we rented snorkeling equipment and went into the water on our own at another location.
