Today, I would have loved to ride over the Splügen Pass. But of course, things turned out differently. After breakfast, I started early to tackle the alpine stage. At Bonaduz, I turned south, the route became more challenging but also very beautiful. The highlight was the Viamala Gorge. Even though I shared the road with cars, I was used to that by now. However, due to the wobbling of my rear wheel, I had to fight against my own brake pads. Adjusting the spokes slightly only brought temporary success. Eventually, I even realized that crossing the Alps with this rear wheel would not be very clever. I hoped to make it to Splügen to hopefully get a replacement there. But I only made it as far as Ardeen. At that point, the rear wheel was so damaged that continuing would have probably caused further damage.
Half an hour later, an empty Swiss postal bus arrived, where I could easily take my bike and luggage. I traveled with it to the village of Splügen and the associated campsite. Unfortunately, my hopes for a replacement wheel were dashed on site. I had forgotten that the next day, due to the Swiss National Holiday (August 1st), all shops would be closed.
