Panama - Day 2

יצא לאור: 30.04.2018

On day 2 in Panama, we rented a car to explore the canal. We started with the Puente des Americas over the Panama Canal, then visited the Miraflores Locks and continued to Gamboa, where you could actually visit several attractions in the rainforest. Unfortunately, the apocalyptic thunderstorm from the previous day was still active in the same region, and it was impossible to leave the car. So we decided to cancel our plans, not knowing if attractions like the treetop cable car were even open. Everything had a very deserted and dismal impression in the pouring rain. On the way from Gamboa, we found another short rainforest trail and walked it briefly during a break in the rain. We then went to the Gatun Locks on the Atlantic side, where there was much more activity and the visitor center was much nicer. But it only confirmed an impression that we could never shake off in Panama and that didn't make us feel very welcome. There is always a bit of rip-off involved. You have to pay $15 for every viewpoint, there is no combination ticket, and you don't have to watch the same movie multiple times. The café in the center closes at 3:00pm, even though it's open until five. But for the most part, the people here are extremely friendly. After another short detour to Colon, we drove up to Portobelo, a small coastal town with a historic fortress. It was really beautiful, although a bit run-down. We managed the night drive back to Panama City well, probably also thanks to the fact - but you know: dinner in Cartagena without a supplement...
