Just a little addendum to yesterday.
This is the Shaka hand sign, also known as the “hang loose” gesture and is a common Hawaiian greeting. Originally it stands for the hammock symbolically stretched between these fingers. The meaning of Hang Loose is pretty casual: “Stay loose!” However, the use of the Hawaiian greeting with the Shaka hand sign is much more versatile. The Shaka sign not only means “Hang Loose”, “Aloha”, “Cool” or simply “How are you?” is also expressed with the hand sign. The surfers adopted the Shaka symbol and established it in the world of surfing. The Shaka is now known beyond the borders of Hawaii.
Today comes the next item on Shahaatz's checklist: surfing in Hawaii.
I can already see him lying on the surfboard, paddling towards the waves with the sun on his face, waiting for the perfect wave so he can “ride” it.
Got up at 7:30 a.m., left at 10:15 a.m. At 8:05 a.m. the text message comes: “no wind, no waves, course is not taking place”.
Such crap. We still have 2 days, maybe it will work then. But a look at the internet brings disillusionment
No waves for the next few days either.
The cancellation throws our entire daily schedule into disarray.
Everything is quickly re-planned and so we start the shopping tour to Kona.
On our tour through the shops and “downtown” there is also some sightseeing.
The Hulihee
Originally built for the island's governor John Adam in 1838, the building became the summer residence of the kings. Now a museum displaying Victorian artifacts from the era of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapiʻolani.
And Mokuaikaua Church
The church is the oldest in the state of Hawaii. When they arrived in 1820, the Protestant missionaries were given the site as a gift by King Kamehameha III. In 1837 the building was constructed according to the plans of Missionary Thurston. Lava stones and coral mortar were used to build the church; the spire is made of wood.
With a shirt for Schahaatz and a magnet for our extractor hood, the yield isn't great, but the feet are flat and Schahaatz's shirt is worn out.
Maybe fishing at sea would actually have been an alternative?
It's sooooo warm even though there's no sun, that kind of humid, oppressive warmth, phew.
Today we finally manage to grill our steaks and destroy the leftover beer in the light, with a grill that actually heats up and without rain.
