After many discussions, Tom convinced me to do the 'Death Road' tour, as we are not constantly in Bolivia. So we booked the tour directly at our hostel with Altitude Adventure, which only cost 60€ instead of the advertised 90€ on the internet. Still a lot of money 😐
So the next morning at 7:00 am we started - we were picked up on time for the first time - and we drove out of La Paz to an altitude of 4,700m, where the fun began. After an introduction, everyone received their equipment.
Unfortunately, my bike was a bit too big - it was already the smallest frame - so I always had to be careful when getting off so that I didn't bump into anything 😖🤕
The entire route is about 60km long and is divided into 3 sections:
1st part - new paved road for 20km
2nd part - Death Road 20km
3rd part - Death Road through the 'jungle' for the last 20km
Since the Death Road - also called the Yungas Road - is not paved and consists partly of big stones, sharp curves, and/or slippery spots due to waterfalls, you cannot concentrate on the beautiful surroundings.
The focus should definitely be on the road, as someone crashes pretty much every year.
One more reason for me to ride with a lot of distance behind. I also didn't want to have the dust of the others in my face, so I stayed at the back with a minimum distance of 1km 😆 and tried to see as much of the landscape as possible 🌎
There were occasional breaks and a snack.
...with helmet hair 😂💁
Tom definitely had more fun with the whole thing and rode in the front 🏍
After the first 30km, I already had pain in my wrist from braking and cramping to keep the handlebars under control. Eventually, my butt also started to ache, which I will still feel a few days later 😷
At the end of the trip, everyone received a 'Survivor T-Shirt' and then we went to the hotel in Coroico at an altitude of 1,200m, where there was a lunch buffet, a shower, and a pool. Overall, a nice facility 🏝
So our day trip was over and we all arrived back in La Paz at around 7 pm, healthy and tired 😴
DONE!! 🎉🎉
