Blog 2 - Modern Muscat

Even in modern Muscat - like in the whole of Oman - the curved dagger - 'Khanjar' - is an essential part of the festive clothing of a respected Omani. In general, tradition is highly valued in Oman in various areas.

Islam is the state religion, but the branch of Ibadism plays a leading role in Oman as the only Islamic state - the Sultan also professes to it. For us Europeans, this kind of Islam appears rather peaceful. In the past, Oman has often initiated and led more or less secret 'peace negotiations' between Sunni and Shiite parties. The first steps towards the then nuclear agreement with Iran were also initiated under the leadership of the former Sultan Qaboos.

The curved dagger 'Khanjar' is still an indispensable part of the festive attire of a respected Omani gentleman. Tradition is highly valued in general.
